Six Asian Women Have Been Murdered

What happened to those six Asian women was racism mixed up with a misogynistic sexual fetishisation. On March 16th, a white man, Aaron Long, aged 21, walked into a massage parlour and opened fire, killing a number of people. He then proceeded to drive to two other massage parlours and do the same. A total of 8 people were murdered, six of who were Asian women, working there.

Their names are; Soon Chung Park, Xiaojie Tan, Suncha Kim, Yong Yue, Hyun Jung Grant, Daoyou Feng. After the arrest of Aaron Long, the Captain Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department said “He apparently has an issue, what he considers a sex addiction, and sees these locations as a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate,” https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/anti-asian-violence-has-surged-u-s-covid-19-it-n1259858

The police captain also said that “yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did”. It should be noted that the Captain himself has got a racist record. What happened to those six Asian women was racism mixed up with a misogynistic sexual fetishisation. It was assumed by many that the women involved were sex workers, previously because they worked in a massage spa. The ages of the victims ranged from late 40’s to early 70’s.

Anna Akana an Asian-American woman is excoriating here in her video as to how tired she is that her community is “always held up as the model minority shield, against white supremacy and being aligned with whiteness” https://www.facebook.com/AnnaAkana/videos/156262276352249.

POC, especially WOC have been gas lit that racism is in our heads, concerning this. Told that we’re the ones that are racist, and that when WOC talk about “misogynoir”, the eye rolls start and they’re made out to be the ‘angry black woman’, going off again. In both cases, the motivation of racism is always denied, indeed immediately after the shooting.

But lest we in UK get too smug, let’s remember that we’ve had a Trumpitsation of blaming the Asian community for Covid, led by Gove, Farage, Julia Hartley-Brewer, etc. On a regular basis the Asian-American/Asian-British community is set up as benchmark as a means of isolation and patronisation.

Tom Matsudo, writing for Al Jazeera noted on April 1st 2021, that “in the United Kingdom, where the problem is equally grave, the authorities are still turning a blind eye to the plight of Asian communities. UK police data suggests a rise of 300 percent in hate crimes towards Chinese, East and Southeast Asians in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the same period in 2018 and 2019. According to End the Virus of Racism, a UK-based advocacy group, this trend continues to this day.

In November last year, Edinburgh mum Wei Saik was physically assaulted and racially abused by a group of teenagers while walking home with her two small children. She said they shouted “COVID” as they smacked her on the head, leaving her terrified. On March 1, Chinese university lecturer, Peng Wang was attacked by a gang of men in the city of Southampton” https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/4/1/its-time-to-talk-about-anti-asian-racism-in-the-uk

Ginnia Cheng, an East Asian writer, comedian and diversity and inclusion advocate writing in ‘The Flock’ magazine on March 25th 2021, said “ Sometimes, in the headlines, it sounds like “I don’t know what it is, I just don’t like her” — when ‘her’ just happens to be the country’s first mixed-race princess. Sometimes, it’s in picking up a gun and shooting down eight people — six of whom just happen to be Asian women.

This week, it’s in the lack of media outrage over a pregnant woman being attacked by a man as she walks home — a woman who just happens to be Jewish. Often, it’s in the apparently random stopping and searching and sometimes shooting of young men — most of whom just happen to be black” https://flockmag.com/yes-this-is-racism-do-i-really-have-to-prove-that

Meanwhile, there has been less media attention and complete police disinterest in the death of Blessing Olusegun, 21, who was found murdered in Sussex last year, to complete press silence. At the Clapham Common vigil, women that were brutalised and manhandled, whilst being arrested, were treated as if they were WOC. We are approaching the trifecta here regarding racism, status of women (misogyny, DV, SH, SA, rape, etc.) and the recent government attacks on our civil liberties that seem bound to curtail attempts to fight for a better society.
